The 5th Annual APL Problem Solving Contest is Now Open

Dyalog, along with other supporting sponsors, has announced the 5th annual APL Problem Solving Contest. This year, the contest has a different format than in previous years, as it consist of 2 phases, both being organised by Studentcompetitions.com.

The competition is meant to be a fun challenge where you can learn a bit about a cool technology, solve some interesting problems, and win cash prizes! We have 43 cash prizes totaling US$8500 plus a paid trip – from anywhere in the world – to attend the 2013 Dyalog User Conference in Florida where the winner will get the opportunity to present their work. The contest has been developed with the aim of getting as many students as possible to test their problem solving skills by using APL to develop solutions to ten short puzzles and then a few more complex problems.

The competition is open to students at all levels, worldwide. Non-students are more than welcome to submit solutions, but only students who can prove enrollment will be in contention for the prizes.

The competition has 2 phases:

Phase I:

• Runs from 18 April to 8 July 2013 23:59 UTC
• Consists of 10 problems, each of which can be solved with a single line of APL code
• Entrants who answer all problems are eligible to participate in Phase II

Phase II:

• Runs from 12 July through 16 August 2013 23:59 UTC
• Is open only to students who have answered all 10 problems in Phase I
• Consists of a number of problems in three broad subject areas (Maths & Computer Science, Engineering and Human Sciences)
• Entrants need not answer all question to be in prize consideration

Dyalog and the sponsors would greatly appreciate if you – and your colleagues – can help us spread the word. For that purpose, we have developed poster materials which you can download from our website. Feel free to give the links to any school and/or University you are in touch with, as well as any students you may know.

As always, students WORLDWIDE are encouraged to enter the competition, and previous winners have come from all parts of the world, from New Zealand, USA and Japan with runner ups from Russia, Germany and more.
