Meet Pat Buteux – our New VP of Sales & Marketing, US
Pat joins Dyalog Ltd. with one of the finest pedigrees in software development and software consulting, and she is particularly experienced in working with business development, strategic branding and positioning. We're delighted to be able to draw on her contacts and expertise, to increase knowledge about Dyalog APL, and to further enhance Dyalog's position in the US market.
Background
Pat's career started in General Electrics in the days of Timesharing Services. She then joined STSC where she was instrumental in helping to transform STSC into an independent software vendor. She was responsible for the launch of STSC's APL product. For several years Pat was responsible for development, marketing and sales of APL*PLUS. She also built STSC's international network of resellers. She was instrumental in changing STCS to Manugistics and prepared the company for their IPO. At STSC, she created an international Business Unit responsible for all international activities, including translations, pricing, global marketing and branding. Pat also built a global reseller network covering more than 70 countries. Since leaving Manugistics, Pat founded Four Palms Inc., a company dedicated to the development, marketing and selling of royalty free digital video software. One of her major achievements was to negotiate with Microsoft for inclusion of the software in PowerPoint. She then moved into independent consulting and worked for a variety of clients, including-JD Edwards. She also established a US subsidiary, for a German based software company and was the program manager for a key account within the US Department of Transportation. This subsequently led to her joining Smart Arrays as a co-owner, working as Vice President of Sales & Marketing on a part time basis. Smart Arrays is a high-end software consulting organization offering a software programming tool kit to analyze large sets of data in memory quickly and easy.
Pat on Dyalog and the future
Speaking about joining Dyalog, Pat says, "I have known Dyalog since the Dyadic days, and have followed the company closely over the years. The transition with the consortium taking ownership of the organization has been especially interesting. I had worked with Gitte Christensen and was impressed with her enthusiasm and work ethic. I also have fond memories of visiting with Carlo Alberto Spinicci and APL Italiana in Milan. I had met with some of Dyalog's UK employees. I found that the core thread which binds everything involving Dyalog is very high standards, for their products and customer support.
"I am delighted to have this opportunity" Pat continues. "I believe that there will always be a demand for APL. We can benefit from the fact that there will always be domain or subject matter experts who want to 'do their own thing'. They know how to program, have no patience with IT departments or long development cycles and can easily express their knowledge through a language like Dyalog APL. Their projects also quickly run through the capabilities of Excel, so they need a stronger and intuitive programming language. Sometimes these projects will grow into major applications, as is evident already with some of Dyalog's largest customers. We have a huge advantage, by offering a full development environment.
"Now, and into the future, data will continue to grow faster than people can analyze it, so being able to handle large data sets quickly and easily is very desirable. The virtual aspects of today's computing have made it easier to handle the special APL character set and to fit the language into existing IT frameworks. For example, APL on the new slate computers avoids keyboard and display font problems that had made APL cumbersome in the past. Dyalog's new Remote Integrated Development Environment (RIDE) that separates the interpreter from the user interface will make it even easier to develop applications for handheld devices."
Pat’s view on the US market
"Dyalog already has a strong base of satisfied clients, which is an advantage, but the challenge now is to broaden awareness about Dyalog APL and bring new clients on board. In my experience, APL has been more popular in Europe. There is definitely an opportunity to increase the sales in the US, when you look at the overall size of the market.
"It is my plan to be very visible and proactive to create a lot of positive energy around Dyalog APL. To that end, I also plan on using Social and Business Networking sites to market, which are easier, and more cost-efficient. I am convinced that we will find a number of new opportunities and I am confident that we will be able to grow Dyalog's business in the US.
"Our ability to measure the needs of our prospects and clients and to meet those needs will determine our success. We have a really good platform to work from, so it will be interesting to review what we have achieved in 3 year's time" Pat finishes with a smile. Pat has a B.S. Mathematics from Syracuse University, and has taken post graduate studies at George Washington University as well as passed Leadership Training in General Electric. In her free time, Pat enjoys spending time with her grandchildren and volunteers with their activities, in particular the Girl Scouts. She is well versed in fine wines and likes to check out the local Virginia Wineries. She also loves playing tour-guide; so if you're coming to Washington, let her know as she can show you around Washington with the insight that comes with living in the area for many years.
