Dyalog APL for the Raspberry Pi
Dyalog Ltd is delighted to announce the general availability of Dyalog APL Version 13.2 for the Raspberry Pi - models A and B, running Debian-based operating systems, are supported.
Morten Kromberg, CTO of Dyalog, says, "Dyalog APL for the Raspberry Pi is a complete 32-bit Linux interpreter with the same APL language features as 32-bit Dyalog APL version 13.2 on any other platform, including Linux/x86, AIX and Windows. The new system for the Raspberry Pi is available via a free download from our website and can be installed using standard "apt-get" commands. By default, the APL system is supplied with a non-commercial licence. APL is a highly attractive notation for expressing solutions to many of the computational challenges that Raspberry Pi projects are likely to encounter at all levels of education or business. We are building an APL-based robot in-house using a Raspberry Pi Model A and documenting progress in my CTO blog.”
Romilly Cocking, veteran APLer and co-founder of Quick2QWire, comments, "I can remember my own passionate enthusiasm and excitement when I first discovered APL. I'm delighted that this freely available version for the incredibly successful Raspberry Pi will bring the language to a whole new community of future programmers."
The Raspberry Pi is a credit-card-sized single-board computer developed in the UK by the Raspberry Pi Foundation with the intention of promoting the teaching of basic computer science in schools. Over 1 million of these low-cost (US $25 for the cheapest "Model A") devices have been shipped since they became widely available in early 2012.
The APL language is highly effective at solving problems that involve performing complex calculations on lists or arrays of data. Its bit-manipulation capabilities make it a great tool for Embedded, Robotics and Computer Vision applications.
